The UFS chemist is a not-for-profit community pharmacy that has been operating in Mount Gambier since 1916. Its launch was prompted by the big rise in the cost of drugs during World War I – the Friendly Societies considered the increases too high, and decided to establish their own dispensary on true not-for-profit principles to ensure that members would receive quality prescribed medicines at affordable prices.

Originally located in the Mount Gambier Hotel building where it was known as the U.F.S. Dispensary, the chemist moved to its present site at 51 Commercial Street (East) in 1955. Governed by an elected Board of Directors and owned by its members, all income generated flows into member services and benefits, including in-store deals, substantial member discounts and a comprehensive list of services.

As a Quality Care Accredited organisation, UFS is committed to better understanding customer needs and providing service that ultimately exceeds expectations. Since May 2013, the new look Mount Gambier UFS Chemist has offered an even greater range of products and services, including Medscheck, health checks for diabetes and blood pressure, home medication reviews and a robotic dispensary machine.

The larger and brighter store also has an expanded range of beauty products, and a new treatment room offering massages and facials.
